Option Your Backyard to Make it Yours

When considering your backyard renovation, you likely already have an idea of what problem you want to solve. You may not be sure though of what the right solution is for your family. You've found inspiration in other photos or have seen someone's backyard that wowed you. You have an idea of what appeals to you and what does not. You may also find that you become overwhelmed with having to make decisions about the options will be best for your backyard.

What’s Right for You?

Pergolas, decks, patios, water features, stairs, and walkways are great places to make memories. The question you ask is what is right for you? Understand that, in the beginning, it's OK not knowing what options are going to best serve your property. This is where an experienced backyard expert can really help add value to your journey.

The first thing to do is evaluate what your needs and wants are. Ask yourself, "What do I want to do in my backyard?" Who do you see there with you? What are those people doing? How often are they there? Then decide if everything you want in your space is going to be there to benefit you and your family. Or is it there to impress the neighbors? I'm guessing it's not the latter.

Robert Molinet, owner and crew leader of Sierra Landscape Management, has spent years understanding what works and what doesn't work when designing a backyard. "People often don't know what is available and don't know what's right for them. They need some guidance." Robert explains that it's not up to him to decide what the client wants, but to take their ideas and direct them towards a solution that will work best for them. "People just want to make the right decision."

Communication

An open dialog between you and your contractor is key.

For example, telling your landscape designer that you want an oak tree next to the house might lead him to try to understand why. Perhaps you had a big oak tree in your yard growing up that provided a large, shaded area during the summer. That explanation gives Robert information to help you decide if the sight of a big, beautiful tree is important or if you want a large, shaded area. You may not know that there are other shade-providing options for your property other than a big tree. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's up to your landscaper to guide you.

In another scenario, you may see a picture of a stately pergola on a huge patio and think they're gorgeous. But later in the conversation you mention that your kids play soccer every chance they get. Based on that, will the pergola and patio be the best solution for your family? That's where an expert can advise you on a direction to take and even discuss how your property can change with your family's needs.

The Non-Negotiables

There are some options that are non-negotiable. Robert's experience dictates that. Like when a new patio is installed, you're probably getting a drainage system installed below it. You won't see it. But that can be a smart investment in keeping your basement dry when the torrential rains hit. You'll be glad it's there and Robert knows it.

Having lots of options can often be a negative thing. If you're presented with too many directions, you may have trouble deciding which way to go. Sierra Landscape Management listens to your wants and needs to help guide you and your decision-making process. They can provide you with detailed information through their website, on their YouTube channel, and in-person. All of this is designed to guide you to make the right decisions for you and your family.  When you're ready to start making those decisions, find more information in our Buyer’s Guide.
