Why is Autumn Such a Great Time of the Year?

A ground-level view from High Point State Park.

Fall is pretty darn special here in New Jersey, especially in the northern parts of the state. Sussex County, Morris County, Warren County, Passaic County, and Hunterdon County among others, all share very similar topography and geography. Seeing the reflection of the leaves on the water at Lake Mohawk, the smell of wood burning stoves as you walk through the shops in Andover, rows of trees standing like soldiers while apple picking in Chester, all provide positive sensory feedback that remind you to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.

As optimists, we try to look for the brighter side of things, and autumn is no exception. So with that, we wanted to remind you that the fall is indeed a great time to get out into nature and enjoy everything that this time of year has to offer. Here’s our take on why.

  • The colors get turned up to 11
During my commutes in previous years, I would notice leaves begining to change, sometimes around late August. It was a daily occurrence to see how many trees have succumb to the transformation process. Many drives would take me across Route 80 towards Blairstown. I would crest each hill as I got closer to the Pennsylvania border and see the mountainside looking like an unrestrained Bob Ross painting.

  • Cooler weather
With the arrival of that crisp air, who doesn’t love the feel of a soft, fluffy sweater or vest that keeps you warm, but isn’t constraining like your winter parka? Your favorite wool sweater is likely all you’ll need on the cooler days. On those warmer days in the middle of the pumpkin patch, a zip-up vest is perfect attire.

  • No bugs!
I don’t know about you, but having to swat away gnats and mosquitoes every 4.5 seconds is not something I enjoy. But with the onslaught of the cooler weather, most of those tiny, flying annoyances are dead or dormant.

  • The smells
One of the things I remember from growing up was the bacon-like smell of the maple smoke wafting through the chilly air from my father’s wood-burning stove. And the scent of the fallen leaves only enhanced the sound of the crunch as I walked through the backyard.

  • Delicious food
With the cooler weather comes warmer foods. Hot cocoa, s’mores, warm apple cider, brats, pumpkin pie, apple-cinnamon donuts, pumpkin lattes, turkey with mashed potatoes. Hmm… Now I’m hungry.

  • So many things to do
Holy Harvest, Batman! Where do we begin? All of us at Sierra Landscape Management enjoy the outdoors so we’ like to remind you to get outside and enjoy the amazing array of choices. A simple Google search will point you in every direction, but here are some things to do that we’ve enjoyed.
